Talk:Main Page
From FlowersWiki
Here are some ideas for what this wiki can be used for:
- A page to collect popular comments and messages to send with the flowers.
- A flower organization page to decide what flowers to get and organize ideas about how to break up the money (i.e. how many roses, how many carnations, huge bouquets, etc.)
- Discussion of where the flowers should be purchased: York Flowers (Blackistone) has been suggested as being very high quality.

Introduction
The main page needs some context as to what this is all about.
Chocolate
chocolate is an excellent idea!
I'm really digging something like this fruit/chocolate arrangement. She could share it with other reporters, and they will wish they were brave like her. And chocolate covered strawberries are classy.
Paypal
It should be known that PayPal is making a killing on all these fees! They are taking out an average of 45¢ (between 5% and 10%, depending on payment type) per donation! --Fitchmicah 01:46, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I keep seeing mention of *this much $ has been collected so far* - would someone please tell me WHERE do we send the money?! WHERE is it being collected? WHAT LINK do I go to? Please help! Thanks!
Suggestions
We can contact Clarity Sanderson of Sandy, UT, at 801-755-7195 Fax: 800-796-6860. She is the person who coordinated the previous sending of flowers to Helen as mentioned here:http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2006/04/helen-thomas-gets-flowers-from-left.html. Her phone numbers I found here: http://www.vlshomes.com/brokers/xgld/xatu01csanderson/.
You should get started with ordering flowers now, with at least a few for delivery today. That way, hopefully some of the DC-area redditors can photographer the first deliveries at Hearst, which would spur more people to participate, since there would be evidence that it was actually happening. For the bulk of them, waiting for more carefully selected/negotiated choices are fine, but there's no reason to wait to get things started.
It'll probably be good to have to be multiple vendors, since it looks like we'll have enough to exhaust the supply of small or medium-sized flower shops.
- It might be too late to have the flowers delivered today, but I think I will order several hundred dollars worth of them tonight for delivery first thing tomorrow morning. --Fitchmicah 22:46, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Surely there is some place that does 24-hour flowers, and the Hearst offices should be active 24/7 even if she's not there. Maybe if there are local redditors, they could go in person and try to convince the Hearst people to give them her home address. Probably too late for tonight... but maybe not.
- York Flowers has a 24 hour phone number. If there is actually a person on the other end, then maybe if the order is big enough you could convince them to make an initial delivery tonight.
- I have made a page for the first order here, please change anything! My phone is dead, I need to go home and charge it so that I can call them quickly! --Fitchmicah 23:27, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- I highly suggest that you call and let them know you plan to order a ton of flowers and try to get a better deal. I got their voicemail so you may have to call in the morning during "regular business hours." That may even be better because $140 for two dozen roses seems very very high.
- Agreed. the prices are sky high from this shop, plus the proposed order includes over $100 of delivery charges. That's a rip off! It's imperative to handle this with some sort of a personal relationship, otherwise the donors' money will be squandered. Call a half dozen shops, explain the situation, and get some personal service and volume discounts. Or email me back and I'll do it.
You could also try sending flowers to both the White House Press Room as well as her personal office tomorrow. That way you can determine whether they'd actually be delivered or disposed of before sending the motherload... --TitanBane 22:52, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Hello, Why is your reddit.com profile page showing up as 404? It has some people worried. Thanks!
- That is understandable. I actually don't know why. I think it is because I just created that account today. I wanted to have an account by my real name so that I can be held accountable. --Fitchmicah 23:29, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe you could create the "About" page with a little more than just your name; Micah Fitch is probably not unambiguous. Are youth this Micah Fitch?--Ragesoss 00:10, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- yes, that is me : ) --Fitchmicah 01:09, 25 April 2008 (UTC))
Heya. A few suggestions from my blog at http://persobje.freezoka.com/wordpress/?p=15.
I basically think it would be overkill to spend all the donations simply on flowers/gifts. Why not make a statement and give a part of the money to charity? That way not only would Mrs. Thomas get some support, we could also perhaps feed some people.
Another suggestion was to donate to organizations caring for the victims of torture.
So here’s a few organizations to which you can donate money so hunger can be averted for at least a few people.

organizations involved in helping victims of torture:

I donated money to be spent on flowers, and though it is tempting to look to spend some of the pot on worthy causes, I see it as slightly disingenuous and contrary to the stated aim of the fund. Furthermore, as a statement it becomes more powerful and representative of those who have donated if it is all spent as intended on flowers. --Simondo 10:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
- The donations are still coming in. How about setting up ongoing flower "subscription" with this florist?
Don't forget to leave an address to where Helen Thomas can send a thank you!!!!
Regular Donations to Hospitals
Saw this today on reddit: "From the Flickr account: She also indicated that she would like to share the arrangements and make a donation to Children's Hospital. I think this is a great idea and, if the florist is willing, taking the flowers to a Children's Hospital in Helen Thomas's name would be a nice way to show our appreciation."
It gives me a new idea: so let's say we have the Helen Thomas award. Each month, a winner is chosen (preferably from the white house press corps). 10 boquets of flowers are sent to the reporter with a note saying, "Congratulations. You have earned the Helen Thomas Award. In addition to the flowers you have recieved, $x worth of flowers will be delivered to the Hospital of your choice." Then they choose a hospital, and we send flowers there, each with a note that says, "On behalf of Jane Smith, winner of the May 2008 Helen Thomas award." (This may very well say Helen Thomas, the winner of the Helen Thomas award)
Actually, no not every month. There is a vote every month. If one journalist does not get enough votes, there are no flowers. That way we don't end up giving a forced award just to give one. Thoughts? Growinglotus 16:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
